On Tuesday, September 24, 2024 City Council voted 3-2 to adopt the proposed compensation increase of 18% for salaries plus additional money for medical, longevity and assignment causing the adoption of a deficit budget. Mayor Pro Tem Sharon Kwan and I voted no on this deficit budget.
At the meeting, I asked that the total amount of the compensation packages be discussed in order to determine affordability, but was told that the amount attributable to increases in medical pay, longevity pay, special assignment pay and other benefits negotiated were not public record and could not be discussed at an open meeting. This information could be released publicly on a vote of a majority of City Council, but with the majority voting for the deficit budget, it is unlikely that the majority will want the total compensation cost to be disclosed.
This Tuesday, October 1, 2024, Council will consider adoption of raises for Upper Management and Non-Represented Employees in an amount that totals more than $9.1M over the next 3 years, at least $1.8M the first year. That means, this fiscal year will be over budget by at least $3M if adopted.
Total cost for all 5 unions, Upper Management and Non-Represented Employees salary increase alone will be over $30M over the next 3 years. You can only guess how much more the additional benefits will cost the taxpayers.
