Dear Blossom Hill Families:
Our school was buzzing last week when students brought in the results of their scientific investigations to share with the community at the annual Science Fair. The goals of the event were to provide an opportunity for students to BEE CURIOUS while fostering enthusiasm for science, engineering, and an understanding of the scientific method. Without a doubt, the goals were met!
This year, our Science Fair Committee chairs, Melissa Crow and Michelle Avlas, along with unofficial chair, Nicole Duke, went above and beyond setting students up for success. They kicked off the event by partnering with Mrs. Grespan to provide classroom presentations explaining the Scientific Method and promoting excitement by sharing ideas for potential projects. In addition, they arranged a Fun with Physics assembly with Professor Smart that left both students and staff enthralled and inspired. This was followed by the Science Fair where over 225 student participants shared their projects with classmates, teachers, families, and superintendent Paul Johnson.
Extra special gratitude goes to parents Nicole Duke, Coral Soto, Kate Ferguson, Laura Inozemtseva, Amy Gregor, Shweta Singhal, Shaonan Tian, Sambit Das, Tara Mosley, Kathy Kwong, Meagan Stephens, Sushma Prasad, Laleh Youseflavi, Prak Nayak, and Yashaswini Pattal for so generously sharing their time, wisdom, and kind hearts to provide logistical help and thoughtful and meaningful feedback to students about their implementation of the Scientific Method. This task literally took hours and was a labor of love. These parent volunteers truly embody the Developmental Assets of our Project Cornerstone program: Family Support, Positive Family Communication, Other Adult Relationships, Caring Neighborhood, Caring School Climate, & Parent Involvement in School.
The icing on the cake was Family Fun Science Night when our community was able to gather to celebrate our children. Along with the Science Fair projects, the evening included a visit from the Fisher Middle School Robotics Club. BH students had the chance to work with BH alumni to code, as well as design and build model bridges. In addition, two Fisher students shared a STEAM project they had designed and built that powered a bottle rocket with water ~ providing endless entertainment out on the field.
We were in luck with the beautiful (almost spring-like) evening which allowed families to purchase dinner from food trucks and eat in our outdoor eating area ~ providing parents a peek into their child’s daily lunch routine. Seeing families connect, mingle, and enjoy one another filled my bucket and was a reminder of how fortunate we are to have such a strong, student-centered community.
Another key contributor to the success of the evening was Kristin Tylko, LGUSD TOSA. Kristin coordinated the participation of the Fisher students and supported them in planning and prepping their projects and activities. In witnessing her work with students in grades K-8, it is easy to understand how Kristin has quickly become a highly-valued and treasured member of our team.
An enrichment event such as this could not take place without your support and the sponsorship of our Home & School Club and One Community LG.
If your child enjoyed the Science Fair, I encourage you to explore the following resource. The Bay Area Science Festival website maintains a year-round calendar of fun science and nature-related events at: http://www.bayareascience.org/calendar/. Collaborating together, we can continue to support a sense of wonder in the world and encourage our children to think about how things work and ask questions.
In education together,
Lisa Reynolds, Principal
