Team SLELO is kicking off a busy field season. We're excited to share some updates and invite you to join upcoming events and volunteer opportunities. We also have new job opportunities that may interest you or your networks.

Updates

Biocontrol Updates

Team SLELO released 625 Hypena opulenta individuals including 150 adults, 150 pupae, and 325 larvae. Populations were divided evenly and released at Robert Whele State Park and Grenadier Island.

Connected Lands and Waters (CLAW)

We kicked off our new CLAW initiative in 2023, in which our early detection team conducted 5 field surveys in the Algonquin to Adirondack (A2A) corridor. ​

This field season we plan to survey Bombay & Brasher State Forests, and Ironsides Island.

iMapInvasives

From June 26 and July 31 join the biggest mapping challenge of the year! Prizes will be given to those with the highest observations (presence or not detected) for tree of heaven, jumping worm, beech leaf disease, water chestnut, European frogbit, and watercress. The PRISM region with the most records for select species will also get a trophy!

Volunteer Opportunities

Protect Waters


This opportunity is best for those who enjoy spending time on the water or who own waterfront property. Participants adopt a waterbody to monitor for the presence of aquatic invasive species and report observations to NYiMapInvasives. Training and resources are available.

This opportunity is best for those who enjoy hiking, spending time in forests or who own land. Participants take a training to learn to recognize and report priority invasive species to NYiMapInvasives, and survey their favorite hiking trails or forested areas.

Assist Biocontrol Monitoring

Assist an emerald ash borer biocontrol monitoring program occurring on Wednesdays at 10 AM from June 5th through September 25th at the SUNY Oswego Rice Creek Field Station. No experience is necessary and guidance will be given.

What: Manual removal of invasive plants. 

When: Kicks off on July 12th, with multiple dates in July and August.

Where: Multiple locations in Oswego & Jefferson Counties. 

Details: No experience is needed, and tools will be provided.

Join our partners, at the Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program on July 31st, 10-11:30 AM, to learn roadside-specific invasive plant identification skills, spread prevention techniques, and best management practices. This webinar offers 1.25 NYS pesticide credits in categories 3a, 6a, and 9.
