Indigenous People's Day

Indigenous Peoples' Day

Indigenous Peoples’ Day, which falls on Monday, October 10 this year, recognizes and celebrates the unique heritage, diverse cultures, and outstanding contributions of the Native people who are the first inhabitants of the Americas, including the land that became the United States.

ARC will hold its annual Indigenous Peoples' March on Monday, October 10 to reflect and remember what occurred on the land occupied by ARC. The March will begin at 12:00 pm outside Davies Hall.

This is ARC's Land Acknowledgment Statement:

We acknowledge the land which we occupy at American River College as the traditional home of the Nisenan, Maidu, and Miwok tribal nations. These sovereign people have been the caretakers of this land since time immemorial. Despite centuries of genocide and occupation the Nisenan, Maidu, and Miwok continue as vibrant and resilient tribes and bands, both Federally recognized and unrecognized. We take this opportunity to acknowledge the generations that have gone before as well as the present-day Nisenan, Maidu, and Miwok people.

DACA

Supporting Dreamers: DACA Update

While we are disappointed in the recent Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals’ decision on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) program, it doesn’t change our commitment to welcome and serve all students at the Los Rios Colleges. We will use all tools available to us to ensure every student feels safe and supported on our campuses. You have a place here!

If you need assistance, have questions about what the recent DACA ruling means for you, or need support, please contact the ARC UndocuScholar Resource Connection.

Free Immigration Legal Services

The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA), in collaboration with the Los Rios Community College District, offers free virtual/telephone immigration consultations to all students, faculty, and staff. CHIRLA immigration services include:

  • Immigration consultations
  • Assistance with DACA renewals
  • Naturalization information
  • Family-based immigration information
  • Help to understand your rights

To make an appointment:

  1. Visit the CHIRLA Student Legal Services webpage
  2. Click the “Community Colleges” button to view consultations dates
  3. Select a date and time

Save the Date: Undocumented Student Action Week

In just two weeks we will also be kicking off the California Community Colleges Undocumented Student Action Week which will run from Monday, October 17 through Friday, October 21. Webinars will be held from 9:00 to 10:00 am each day. We urge all employees and students to come learn more about how you can advocate for the protection of the DACA program and assist in building a strong ecosystem that breaks down silos and promotes a collaborative campus approach to support undocumented student success.

National Coming Out Day

National Coming Out Day

National Coming Out Day will be celebrated globally on Tuesday, October 11. Founded on the idea that increased visibility leads to decreased bias, this day encourages members of the LGBTQ+ community to come out and live their true identity.

We want to acknowledge that there are many reasons that people may not be “out.” Society is not always a safe and welcoming place. Coming out is brave and freeing, but can be difficult.

On October 11, we recognize all those who live their lives openly, proudly, and without shame. We celebrate the LGBTQ+ students, faculty, staff, and administrators who make our college a more inclusive and equitable place.

ARC’s Pride Center celebrates Coming Out Day with a Love is Love Comedy Hour, on Tuesday, October 11, 12:00 to 1:00 pm in  the Student Center - Center for Leadership and Development. Laughter is universal. Join us to hear about culture, love, college life, and so much more.

Groundbreaking Ceremony

Career Technical Education Groundbreaking

All are invited to attend a groundbreaking for the Career Technical Education facility on Thursday, October 20, 9:30 to 10:30 am. The event will take place in the construction area of campus.

Music

Name That Tune

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, ARC is playing Name That Tune on Wednesday, October 12, 12:00 to 1:00 pm in the Student Center - UNITE Center. Featured will be Hispanic artists from various genres from the 1950s to present. All students are welcome, with prizes for winners. Light snacks will be provided.

Mental Health and Awareness

October Mental Health Events

The start of October means the fall season is upon us. The magic of the season shows us how beautiful it can be to let things go that no longer serve us. During this time, it’s important to reflect on what burdens, barriers, and blockages we should allow to “fall” away. To support you in these efforts, Los Rios' Center for Mental Health and Wellness is hosting three virtual workshops to educate, inform, and empower you to make the changes you desire for your success. Click on the workshop title below for more information and the Zoom login.

Professional Development

Collaborate for Change Fall 2022

The Center for Teaching and Learning in the Office of Equity, Institutional Effectiveness, and Innovation is excited to offer a NEW way to support faculty working toward identifying and closing equity gaps for our students. This fall, we are offering Collaborate for Change appointments on Fridays, 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, where we create space for individual, faculty-driven conversations to support faculty wherever they are in their personal and professional equity journeys.

ARC faculty have made some transformational shifts within their spheres of influence by adopting equitable practices and refining their equity lens. One way to support continued growth in these areas is to create space and community where we can talk through and/or bounce ideas off one another.

These sessions can involve conversations about but are not limited to:

  • Individual faculty equity reflection statements
  • Syllabi, assignments, assessments, etc.
  • Program review and annual unit planning
  • Classroom student success/disproportionate impact data

Consultants for this program are Dr. Veronica Lopez (Nutrition) and Dr. Jeff Sacha (Sociology). Schedule your appointment now.
