Book Club

Racial Justice Book Circle

You are invited to join Folsom Lake College’s Fall 2022 Racial Justice Book Circle as we read and discuss Shawn A. Ginwright’s book The Four Pivots: Reimagining Justice, Reimaging Ourselves. Supplemented with reflections, prompts, cutting-edge research, and the author’s own insights and lived experience as an African American social scientist, professor, and movement builder, The Four Pivots helps us uncover our obstruction points. It shows us how to discover new lenses and boldly assert our need for connection, transformation, trust, wholeness, and healing. It gives us permission to create a better future - to acknowledge that a broken system has been predefining our dreams and limiting what we allow ourselves to imagine, but that it doesn’t have to be that way at all. Are you ready to pivot?

To accompany the book read, join your colleagues on Wednesdays from 11:45 am to 1:00 pm via Zoom, starting Wednesday, September 28, to review and discuss the concepts addressed. All Los Rios employees are welcome to participate! RSVP now. We also encourage you to support BIPOC-owned businesses and authors by shopping at these local Black-owned bookstores - Underground Books or Carol’s Books. Several e-copies of the book are also available via the Los Rios Libraries. We hope you will join us as we continue our college and district's commitment to cultivating a culture of anti-racism on our campuses!

Mental Health and Awareness

Mental Health and Wellness Workshops

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Our mission this month as a Los Rios community is to R.I.S.E. together. R.I.S.E stands for Reducing stigma, Increasing awareness, Strengthening resolve, and Elevating over the obstacles that can weigh us down. When we R.I.S.E. as a community, it supports us all as “Sticks in a bundle are unbreakable” (African proverb).

This month, join the Los Rios Center for Mental Health and Wellness team for three workshop opportunities for all Los Rios students and employees. These workshops will focus on coping with stress, mindfulness, and gaining skills to support yourself or those you love who may be at higher risk for suicide. Click on the workshop title for more information and the Zoom link.

National Hispanic Latino Awareness Month

Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month

Each year, we observe National Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures, and contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively.

Professional Development

Navigating Our Religiously Diverse Campus

Join ARC and Interfaith America for two upcoming professional development Zoom workshops. Both events are facilitated by Interfaith America, a nonprofit organization founded in 2002 based on the idea that religious difference should serve as a bridge of cooperation rather than a barrier of division.

Engaging Diverse Religious, Spiritual, and Secular Identities & Why It Matters

Friday, September 16, 1:00 to 3:00 pm

Register now to receive the Zoom meeting link

70-90% of Americans say that faith is important to them (Bridgespan, 2021). Yet, less than half of college students and staff say they have dedicated time to learning about diverse religious groups (IFYC, 2020) despite encountering significant religious diversity on campus. This interactive 2-hour session is designed for a broad range of campus staff and faculty, focused on professionals who are new to the topic.

Welcoming, Belonging, and Thriving: Religious, Spiritual and Secular Identity & Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Wednesday, September 21, 10:00 am to 12:00 pm

Register now to receive the Zoom meeting link

Religious, spiritual, and secular identities and movements inspire some of the most impactful positive social changes in the U.S., yet they are also sources of prejudice and exclusion. This paradox can cause campus leaders to feel ill-equipped when building religiously diverse campus environments that may otherwise enable our students, staff, faculty, and community partners to thrive. This interactive 2-hour session is designed for campus professionals in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion work on campus.

Student with LRPD officer

New LRPD Uniforms

The Los Rios Police Department has changed its uniforms, with the goal of making officers more approachable while still clearly identifiable to our community. LRPD has been engaged in a series of substantive reforms in the wake of the murder of George Floyd and our organizational commitment to equity and social justice, aligned with the work of Campaign Zero. This change is part of that work, with the goal of demilitarizing the look of officers’ uniforms as well as ensuring that our officers are not confused with those from other agencies.
