August 30, 2022 - Attorneys Michael Lenert and Lauren Edmunds recently settled a fatal trucking accident lawsuit for $775,000 -$275,000 above the available insurance policy limits - after the insurance company originally denied liability, claiming its insureds were not responsible for the crash.

“This tragedy was one that could have been avoided had this company simply complied with its obligations to maintain its vehicles and properly train its staff on the proper inspection and operation of its vehicles. Simply offering its inadequate policy limits after summarily rejecting my client’s claims for more than two years was unacceptable. Although this settlement fails to bring back a young husband and father, our client is hopeful that it will place other companies on notice that such conduct will not be tolerated," said Michael Lenert.

In August 2022, 68 years after the contamination began and 34 years after it ended, the federal government finally acknowledged the damage caused as a consequence of their wrongdoing and passed the PACT Act into law. The Act allows any person that lived, worked, or served at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune for more than 30 days between August 1953 and December 1987 and suffered a qualifying injury to file a claim. There are, however, time limitations on when a claim may be brought. 

Our veterans and their families deserved better than to be poisoned with dangerous chemicals in their drinking water as they dedicated their lives to protecting our country. The federal government must be held accountable for failing to act for decades after learning of the water contamination and the associated risks. Meyers & Flowers plans to bring the stories of these Marines and their families to light and obtain the justice they deserve for the debilitating conditions resulting from the government’s inexcusable inaction.
