Organics like food scraps, yard trimmings, paper, and cardboard make up half of what Californians dump in landfills. Organic waste in the landfills emit Methane, a climate super pollutant 84 times more powerful than carbon dioxide.
- The United States is losing up to 30-40% of its food to the landfill. Uneaten food wastes land, water, energy, fertilizer, human resources and money.
- In California, nearly 1 in 8 are experiencing hunger, and 1 in 5 of those are children.
In 2018, California disposed of approximately 6 million tons of food waste. Many local nonprofit organizations have worked hard to reduce this staggering number. These nonprofits including Abound Foodcare, Orange County Food Bank and Second Harvest Food Bank, work together to rescue food from restaurants, grocery stores, distributors, schools and more.
