The month of April is Food Waste Prevention Month in Orange County. Food waste is a significant issue in California and throughout the U.S.

During Food Waste Prevention Month, a range of partners statewide come together to raise awareness about the impacts of food waste in our homes, workplaces, and communities.
Why is this important?
Things to know...

Organics like food scraps, yard trimmings, paper, and cardboard make up half of what Californians dump in landfills. Organic waste in the landfills emit Methane, a climate super pollutant 84 times more powerful than carbon dioxide.

  • The United States is losing up to 30-40% of its food to the landfill. Uneaten food wastes land, water, energy, fertilizer, human resources and money.
  • In California, nearly 1 in 8 are experiencing hunger, and 1 in 5 of those are children.

In 2018, California disposed of approximately 6 million tons of food waste. Many local nonprofit organizations have worked hard to reduce this staggering number. These nonprofits including Abound Foodcare, Orange County Food Bank and Second Harvest Food Bank, work together to rescue food from restaurants, grocery stores, distributors, schools and more. Through collaboration, we can work together to reduce food waste and food insecurity in Orange County
Senate Bill (SB)-1383

  • Effective January 1, 2022
  • Help reduce organic waste disposal 75% by 2025
  • Goal to recover at least 20% of currently disposed edible food by 2025
  • Helps reduce the amount of methane gasses produced from landfills to help the climate crisis.
