Did you know...

Maternity/Paternity Leave

If an employee is on a maternity/paternity leave, they are still considered employed and eligible for continued insurance for the duration of the period allowed by the EI Act (whether or not benefits are payable under the EI Act or other legislation). The EI Act is currently 18 months for maternity leave.

If an employee is on maternity/paternity leave, they can choose to keep or terminate all benefits. There is also an option to keep the following as packages:

  • Health
  • Dental
  • Life
  • Disability (cannot keep Disability without Life Insurance)

If an employee chooses to terminate some or all benefits while on maternity/paternity leave, a change form must be filled out. The benefits they would like to keep or remove should be clearly identified prior to going on leave. Employees cannot change their mind in the middle of their leave, benefits would not be reinstated until their return to work date, except in the change of spousal coverage being lost.

Temporary Lay-off, Leave of Absence

If an employee is not actively at work due to a leave of absence or temporary lay-off, groups can continue coverage for their employees:

  • Weekly Indemnity (WI) and Long Term Disability (LTD) can be continued for one month from the end of the month in which employment was interrupted. (ie: If an employee is on layoff as of December 10 – the WI and LTD coverage can be continued until January 31)
  • All other Life coverages can be continued up to six months from the end of the month in which employment was interrupted. (ie: If an employee is on layoff as of December 10 – Life, Accidental Death & DismembermentCritical Illness, Dependent Life can be continued until June 30)
  • Health and Dental benefits can be continued on a premium paying basis.

Saskatchewan Blue Cross is raising money for STARS Rescue on the Prairie

STARS Air Ambulance is a life-saving charitable organization that cares for and transports critically ill and injured patients. Since STARS launched in Saskatchewan, more than 5,000 missions have been flown to 178 communities across the province.

Saskatchewan Blue Cross is honored to be participating in this year’s STARS Rescue on the Prairie taking place on September 15. Our very own Megan Douglas, Senior Vice-President, Chief Brand & Commercial Officer is joining a group of community leaders who have taken on the brave challenge of being dropped off at a remote location with the goal of raising $50,000 for STARS.

To support this year’s STARS Rescue on the Prairie, Saskatchewan Blue Cross will proudly match all donations up to $30,000. Every dollar raised helps to save lives. If you would also like to help Megan and STARS, you can visit her personal fundraising page here!

Med.Hack(+)

Bringing innovation, shifting mindsets, and creating new dialogues to make real-time impacts in creating health care solutions is the goal of Med.Hack(+).

The opportunity to impact the future of health care by supporting this initiative is unique and inspiring to us at Saskatchewan Blue Cross. We’re thrilled to be the title sponsor of this event taking place on September 23 - 25! Click here to learn more about this exciting event.
