Congratulations to CAIRIBU Interactions Core Collaboration Award winners, Jim Hokanson, PhD and Kim Keil Stietz, PhD!
There was a record number of applications for the 2024 RFA for CAIRIBU Collaboration Awards. CAIRIBU Collaboration Awards specifically encourage inter- and trans-disciplinary collaborations, early-stage investigators, investigators new to urology, new collaborations, and field development. Applications this year ranged from those proposing urobiome and infection research, BPH/LUTS, overactive bladder, and incontinence. See list of prior award recipients HERE.
Details about the winning proposals in 2024 are below:
-
Dr. Hokanson is an Assistant Professor in the joint Department of Biomedical Engineering at Marquette University and Medical College of Wisconsin. He completed a CAIRIBU KURe K12 Scholarship at Duke University. His collaboration award is entitled, "Neuroanatomical basis for tibial neuromodulation."
-
Dr. Stiez is an Assistant Professor of Comparative Biosciences in the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She recently became the Biomed Core Co-Director of the CAIRIBU Urology O'Brien Center at the UW-Madison. Her collaboration award is entitled, "Genetic origin of incontinence linked to Shh signaling."

| | ARCTICS = Advancing the Research Capacity of Trainees and Investigators at early Career Stages | | CAIRIBU-affiliated trainees and early-stage investigators met earlier this year and developed a fabulous list of ideas for ARCTICS seminars, all aimed at building skills, increasing knowledge, and boosting trainees' abilities to plan and develop independent careers in genitourinary research. | |
NEXT SEMINAR:
WED., SEPTEMBER 11
2:30-3:30 PM Eastern
(1:30 PM Central | 11:30 AM Pacific)
Link to join available HERE
|
Future ARCTICS seminar topics, through May 2025, will include:
- Developing grant application budgets
- Budgeting for laboratory and research needs
- Research administration tips for scientists (e.g., compliance with regulatory requirements, IACUC, IRB, etc.)
Additionally, watch in 2025 for a multi-part series that will de-mystify "data science" and "big data" and describe concepts related to coding for manipulating data, machine learning, generative artificial intelligence, and more.
| | K12 Career Development Positions | | Launch your career from early-stage to independent urology investigator or clinician-scientist. Apply for a position at a CAIRIBU K12 Institutional Career Development Program. Currently, the Multidisciplinary Urologic Research Career Development Program at Duke University (PI, Cindy Amundsen, MD) and the Urologic Epidemiology Career Development Program at the University of California San Francisco (PI, Alison Huang, MD) are accepting applications for 2024 and 2025. | |

Collaborating for the Advancement of Interdisciplinary Research in Benign Urology
CAIRIBU is a community of NIDDK-funded U54 and P20 Urology Centers and K12 Institutional Career Development Programs whose overarching objectives are to address gaps in knowledge related to epidemiology, etiology, development, progression, and expression of non-malignant urologic conditions and to train the next generation of leaders in urology research. The CAIRIBU Interactions Core is the central coordinating body for the CAIRIBU Community.
