IMMIGRATION: DRIVING GROWTH IN EASTERN IOWA

The Humanitarian & Economic Development Case for Local Involvement of Immigrant Populations

Join us for a FREE in-person training to learn how communities in Eastern Iowa are leveraging local action to build for the future through immigration.

The Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque has recently completed research into the needs and priorities of immigrant communities in their region, and is now leading a collective effort of over fifty local stakeholders to address systemic barriers facing immigrant populations.

Iowa NICE is a nonprofit organization that has been successfully relocating Ukrainian families to DeWitt, IA, and connecting those families with the resources, technical expertise, and community support needed for them to become financially independent and holistically integrated into their new home.

The goal of this training is to provide an overview of the Community Foundation’s 3-year Immigration Community Assessment, and Iowa NICE proven success that came from immersing immigrant populations into Iowa’s communities. Further training opportunities will be available to communities interested in implementing similar programs.

Angela Boelens, president and founder of IA NICE, has over 30 years of combined experience serving on charitable boards, 20 years of experience in strategic planning, business development, process improvement and performance enhancement in a variety of settings including corporate settings, community services, healthcare and academia. She received her MBA from the University of Iowa and is a PMI certified PMP.

Alex Baum serves as the Director of Advocacy, Data, and Learning at the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque in Dubuque, IA.

In his role he manages the Community Foundation’s data, research, and knowledge sharing work for the organization’s seven-county region, which included conducting a three-year Immigration Community Assessment for the area that elevated the priorities of immigrant communities and identified opportunities to provide additional support for immigrant families.

He received his undergraduate degree from Carleton College, and holds a Masters in International Relations from Yale University.
