Good morning from sports reporter J.J. Smith. A new year is soon upon us and people will be coming up with resolutions. A lot of those usually detail stepping out of comfort zones. Zack Nally and I did that very thing this year. We started a podcast at the newspaper called “Paper Boys.” It was definitely scary to jump into something we knew nothing about, but we’ve had a blast and hope you’ve enjoyed listening to us in this new adventure.

In this issue of Lookout, you'll find a story about the arrest of a suspect in the Atlantic murders of 2021 along with our latest top news stories, upcoming events to keep you in the loop, editorials from our editorial staff and our readers, a 4-day tide report, the front cover of The Carteret County News-Times from Dec. 16, 1958, a mouth-watering recipe from Amos Mosquito's and a cute cat up for adoption through the Humane Society.

Suspect in murder of Fulcher brothers announced

After a year and four months of uncertainty, the double murder of brothers Phillip Raymond, 59, and William “David” Fulcher, 57, in Carteret County's Atlantic community has been solved. David Ray Willis, 57, of Atlantic, faces charges for the killings. Sheriff Asa Buck detailed the exhaustive investigation involving over 100 interviews, 140 pieces of evidence, and digital analysis aided by the SBI, Carolina Beach Police, and Homeland Security. Willis was initially arrested on child pornography charges, with subsequent digital evidence linking him to the murders. The sheriff praised the Fulcher family's unwavering support and thanked the community. The case now rests with the district attorney, Scott Thomas, acknowledging the collaborative efforts that led to these charges. Buck confirmed a personal relationship between Willis and the Fulcher brothers and emphasized the forthcoming legal proceedings.
