QGreenland is a free data and mapping tool that supports interdisciplinary Greenland-focused research, teaching, and collaboration.

March 2026

Hello QGreenland users,

In this newsletter, we will introduce the QGreenland Editorial Board Members, ask you a few questions, and share QGreenland updates.

I recently joined the developer team working on data package updates, and am grateful to be part of such a collaborative, engaged community. We would love to hear from you how you are utilizing QGreenland materials and what you would like to see from us (more details below)!

Thank you for engaging with using this open-source tool for learning, researching and teaching about Greenland.

Best,

Rikki Held, QGreenland Intern

Work on QGreenland v4 is well underway and we are pleased to announce that the first alpha release, 'v4.0.0alpha1', is now available! This first draft of QGreenland v4 introduces support for QGIS v3.40.0 (the latest Long Term Release (LTR) version) and updates 5 layers with the following new data:

  • "Terrian models/" BedMachine layers have been updated to use data from BedMachine v6
  • "PROMICE and GC-Net automated weather stations" and "Seismograph stations" layers in the "Human activity/Research sites/" group have been updated to the latest available data.
  • The Earthquakes layer in the "Geology/" group has been updated with data through 2025.
  • "Reference/Borders/Greenland municipalities and population" has been updated to include population statistics from 2025.

QGreenland v4.0.0alpha1 is primarily intended as a "first draft" of QGreenland v4, and many more exciting updates are in the works. We expect to release a few more alpha releases before finalizing v4 later this Spring.
