As we move into the second half of the year, I'm reminded that every child who enters the child welfare system has a unique story—and rarely is that story shaped by just one challenge. Children may be navigating foster care while also experiencing trauma, poverty, mental health concerns, disability, racism, disrupted family relationships, or other overlapping circumstances. At Douglas County CASA, we know that understanding the whole child is essential to advocating for their best interests. That same commitment to understanding the whole child also informs our Step Up for Kansas Kids campaign. This month, the campaign is focusing on intersectionality and how overlapping experiences can shape the support children and families need.
That work is only possible because of people like you. Whether you've volunteered, attended an event, made a donation, shared our mission with a friend, or simply taken the time to learn more about child welfare in Kansas, you are helping build a stronger community for children who need someone in their corner.
As the need for CASA advocacy continues to grow as new children enter the system each month, so does our need for caring volunteers and generous financial supporters. Every additional volunteer means another child can have a consistent advocate. Every donation helps provide the training, supervision, and resources needed to ensure that advocates are prepared to make a lasting difference.
If you know someone who has been looking for a meaningful way to give back or who simply wants to learn more about the children and families we serve, we'd love to connect with them. Some of our greatest volunteers, donors, and community partners first became involved because someone they trusted invited them to learn more. We truly enjoy sharing what we do—and even more, welcoming others into this important work.
In this month's newsletter, you'll find opportunities to get involved, upcoming events, volunteer information sessions, and resources that explore the complex realities children in foster care face. Thank you for standing with Douglas County CASA and for helping ensure every child has someone who believes in them and speaks up for their future.
With gratitude,
Erick Vaughn
