It's our hopefully, completely corrected, "almost Spring" issue... and except for one, looooooong, very cold week or so, we're not really sure if we ever had winter. In any case, let's get to our favorite topic: OUR DOGS!
Issue highlights include:
- Meet New Member Bryony Walter (pronounced like “Brian-knee”) who joined in 2023. We'll be alternating these with our longer form Member Profiles. Special Note: Bryony is a graphic designer and will be assuming all layout in future newsletters so keep an eye out for a greatly improved reader expereince. Thanks, Bryony!
- "Using Treats in Training, and How to Wean Them Off!" by member, Lorraine Pedersen
- Club News and Announcements
- Member brags with a special shout out to Lorraine Pedersen & Zak, who earned his RRCUS Versatility Certificate!
- Rescue - meet Bella and Lozi!
Our cover Girl is once again Kirsi Larjava's Odessa up in BC, in a field of spring color, giving us all something to look forward to. Just below that is Patrick Smith's Maddie, in a typical, "how can that be comfortable," RR chillaxing pose. For inspiration, check out Tinamaria Vanderhorst Charney's Quincy, in agility class! Then, see Bryony & Josiah's Ash and Ember out near Portland.
Thanks, members, for your pix! PLEASE SEND MORE!

It takes YEARS to achieve this, requiring titles in many different fields. As the title suggests, it showcases the versatility of our fabulous breed. The purpose of the RRCUS Versatility Program is to encourage owner participation and acknowledge the accomplishments of Rhodesian Ridgebacks as a versatile breed. Here is the link to the requirements for a VC - and a person does have to apply for it, it's not automatically awarded: https://www.rrcus.org/page-18177
We are SO PROUD of Zak and Lorraine for achieving
this goal! (special note: in 2022, only 6 RRs were awarded this certificate - one of them being our own Betsy Metcalf and her RR Ariat!)

Using Treats in Training & How to Wean Them Off
There are two elements to rewarding your dog – the treat you give your dog and the timing of when it is given. By far, the timing of the reward is the most important element here – any reward must be well-timed or it loses its meaning. In order to be able to reward quickly and easily, you need to have plenty of treats in your pockets or in an easily accessible treat bag/bait pouch. If your dog tends to focus too much on a bait pouch, wear a vest with pockets and make sure BOTH pockets are loaded so you can get a treat quickly with either hand. Fumbling around or dropping the reward ruins the effect, so practice getting treats quickly and smoothly out of your pockets without your dog around if you feel you need to.
A comment I hear a lot from people is, “My dog is great when I have treats, but when I don’t have anything, s/he won’t do anything.” how do you get your dog to do stuff without an instant treat?

NEWS from The Pacific Northwest region of Rhodesian Ridgeback Rescue, Inc (RRRI).
Available for adoption: Lozi & Bella!
Lozi is a 4-yo purebred spayed female Rhodesian Ridgeback who is a compact 62 pounds. She has been in foster care since May, is a happy Ridgeback, and her tail is always wagging. Currently Lozi is being fostered in a household with a female person and a 10-yo male Ridgeback. A good home for Lozi would be a family with a strong daily/weekly routine where someone is gone no more than 4hours at a time. She will do best with another dog in the home.
Find out more here and learn about Bella (see Bella in the pic below), who is also available, by clicking the link below:

RESCUE IS ALWAYS IN NEED OF FOSTER HOMES.
We also need volunteers for home checks, dog evaluation (breed identification and temperament), transport of dogs or equipment. Donations of items such as dog beds, collars, leashes, coats and other RR-sized items are always welcome as well.
Please reach out to our regional volunteers if you can help!

NEW MEMBER SPOTLIGHT:
Bryony Walter, member since 2023
Bryony Walter (pronounced like “Brian-knee”) is originally from South Africa and had two Rhodesian Ridgebacks growing up! Cassie and Amber can be seen standing watch above while Bryony was playing with her brother.
Bryony first came in contact with the NWRRC club when she attended one of the Ridgefield shows in 2023. There she met NWRRC members Kathy Thompson, Cindi Pike, and Mary Mattix who explained more about conformation here in the U.S. and after, they all went to lunch. She was also encouraged to check out more about NWRRC. Bryony said that, "Since then we’ve tried FastCATs, Lure Coursing, and Barn Hunt. It was while trying these that I thought I would like to be part of the club."
Bryony joined the Club with husband Josiah Cabang. They live in Portland. She is a graphic designer and will be taking over the design/layout of this newsletter - yay!!!
| Above is Bryony with Cassie and below are Bryony, Josiah, and their first RR here in the U.S., Ember. They have also since adopted Ash from Rhodesian Ridgeback Rescue. | | | |
LURE COURSING AND FAST CATS: WE NEED MORE VOLUNTEERS!!!!!!!!! Volunteers get very well fed by our fantastic chef Larry and have the opportunity to learn a lot about the sport they are volunteering for and meet more club members and dog people of many different breeds. Fast CAT’s are our club’s big moneymaker – if we can’t put on these events, we will lose a big part of our income. So please consider volunteering – it’s fun and educational and you don’t have to be there the whole day. You can sign up for half a day, a couple of hours or just show up and say you want to help and we can put you to work! Contact Jamie if you would like to help! Jamie's email is whitewingz@aol.com
June 14-16 - Entries open 4/24 - Cascade Hound Show/RRCUS Supported Entry & Jillyn Myers Memorial Trophy Sweeps Awards!!!! https://www.dogzibit.com/project/2024-cha/
See the NWRRC website for more info, premiums, etc.
