ILPMP Releases Updated 2023 Prescription Totals by Drug Type

The ILPMP user-friendly data dashboards on ilpmp.org are regularly updated, de-identified data and available to the public for viewing. Offering this data allows for further analysis of trends in specified regions, assisting in the ability to target geographical areas for healthcare provider education outreach and assess the effectiveness of public health interventions.

The data dashboard, Total Prescriptions by Drug Type, has been updated showing dispensing totals from pharmacies in Illinois for the years 2010 through 2023. Drug types that have been analyzed include benzodiazepine, stimulant, ketamine, opioid, buprenorphine, and fentanyl. Click the dashboard image (below) to see full screen view.

IDPH Releases Statewide Semiannual Overdose Report

Illinois Department Public Health (IDPH) released the latest Statewide Semiannual

Overdose Report for Illinois.

The ILPMP proudly observes International Overdose Awareness Day on August 31st, which is a global event aimed at increasing awareness of overdose prevention strategies and destigmatizing substance use so that all Illinoisans are provided with compassionate care. ILPMP Team Member Awarded Travel Scholarship to NASCSA Conference

ILPMP is proud to announce that Megan Conant, one of our IL PMPnow Coordinators, was awarded the National Association of State Controlled Substance Authorities (NASCSA) Travel Scholarship for the 2024 NASCSA Conference held on October 27, 2024, to October 31, 2024, after sending in her compelling cover letter to the NASCSA Board. This Travel Scholarship allows our newest IL PMPnow Coordinator to gain insight into the differing policies, current and past interventions, and plans throughout the weeklong conference.

The conference coordinates varying topics and learning formats, federal agency updates, workshops, and networking hours are some of the opportunities made available. This year's conference headlines topics such as: Setting the Stage for Second Chances – Hope and Redemption – Professional Recovery Programs; Legal, Illegal or Grey? Trends in Digital Health Involving Controlled Substances; and Unconventional Use of Prescription Monitoring Program Data. Our team appreciates the opportunity to send Megan to the NASCSA Conference where she can gain knowledge to assist in her continued growth.

SAMHSA Releases 2023 Results on Key Substance Use and Mental Health Indicators in the United States

The 2023 Key Substance Use and Mental Health Indicators report summarizes the following:

  • Substance use (tobacco, alcohol, vaping, marijuana and other illicit drug use, as well as the use and misuse of prescription drugs)
  • Initiation of substance use by type
  • Substance use disorders (SUDs)
  • Major depressive episode (MDE), any mental illness, and serious mental illness
  • Mental illness and MDE co-occurring with substance use and SUDs
  • Suicidal thoughts, plans, and attempts
  • Substance use treatment and mental health treatment

Estimates are presented by age group and by race/ethnicity for selected measures.


Educational Resources

Illinois Opioid Overdose Reversal Agent Standardized Procedure allows pharmacies and certain entities to dispense / distribute opioid reversal agents under a standing order in the State of Illinois. This short, animated video briefly discusses these reversal agents and the standardized procedure. The Illinois Prescription Monitoring Program (ILPMP) is an electronic database that collects, tracks, and stores reported dispensing data on Schedule II-V controlled substances, selected drugs of interest, and other health information. The Illinois Department of Human Services oversees the ILPMP, authorized by the Illinois Controlled Substances Act (720 ILCS 570/316). The ILPMP adheres to HIPAA and all access, disclosure, and confidentiality provisions of Illinois Law.
