The ILPMP Advisory Committee held its biannual meeting on March 11, 2025, to discuss ongoing initiatives and updates related to prescription monitoring efforts in the state. The agenda included a review of the ILPMP FY24 Annual Report contents, updates on new process and procedures for IL PMPnow integration, ILPMP IT updates which featured a glimpse of the new ILPMP.org website (coming soon), and discussion on member attestation feedback. Additionally, the ILPMP Peer Review Committee provided an update on its recent threshold rounds and the committee discussed a new project for FY26, the SIUE Cumulative Reference Score.

On March 6, 2025, IL PMPnow Coordinator Jackie DeNardo represented the Illinois Prescription Monitoring Program (ILPMP) at the Illinois Health Information Management Conference in Palatine, Illinois. This event brought together professionals dedicated to managing and safeguarding healthcare data.

Jackie highlighted IL PMPnow and the critical role of ILPMP integration in improving clinical decision-making, enhancing patient safety, and supporting responsible prescribing. Participation in this conference provided a valuable opportunity to engage with health information management (HIM) professionals, who play a crucial role in ensuring the accurate and responsible use of healthcare data.  

Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) Releases New Overdose Data Dashboard

The overdose data dashboard provides details on non-fatal and fatal overdoses and includes information on a variety of substances. Information on associated health outcomes, harm reduction efforts, and links to the Illinois Helpline are also included. The goal is to provide information that can guide intervention and prevention efforts across Illinois. The data is provided by IDPH’s Syndromic Surveillance Program, Vital Records, Office of Disease Control, and Office of Women’s Health and Family Services, and Illinois Department of Human Services, Division of Substance Use and Prevention and Recovery. The revised overdose data dashboard was funded through the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Overdose Data 2 Action-States (OD2A-S) grant.

Newly Released, FREE, Continuing Education Available for Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians on the Importance of PMP Data Integrity

Take advantage of this free ACPE accredited educational opportunity providing 1 hour of continuing education for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. This program, developed in partnership with NASCSA and 12 prescription monitoring program (PMP) administrators, analyzes the importance and value of complete, accurate data reported by dispensers to PMPs and assesses the impact of intentional or non-intentional data entry errors and data omissions on patient safety. It also discusses the downstream impacts of pharmacy-reported PMP data on clinical decision-making processes and helps pharmacy staff identify and implement changes that can be made in their practice setting to improve PMP data integrity.

The Illinois Prescription Monitoring Program (ILPMP) is an electronic database that collects, tracks, and stores reported dispensing data on Schedule II-V controlled substances, selected drugs of interest, and other health information. The Illinois Department of Human Services oversees the ILPMP, authorized by the Illinois Controlled Substances Act (720 ILCS 570/316). The ILPMP adheres to HIPAA and all access, disclosure, and confidentiality provisions of Illinois Law.
