Lindy's Preserve is Open

A beautiful spring afternoon, and even a bit of unexpected sunshine, welcomed more than 125 guests to the opening celebration of the new Lindy Roosenburg Preserve north of Athens near Chauncey. Lindy’s family and friends and many community members joined the Conservancy for the event officially opening our newest nature preserve.

The exceptional 71-acre property showcases mature forests and an abundance of wildflowers and wildlife. The land was purchased last year in memory of Selinde Roosenburg, a local young woman and aspiring wildland firefighter, through a fund generously established by her family. See a slideshow of the event HERE.

Making Our Forests Healthier: Thank You!

With the support of generous donations from our Healthy Forest Friends, Athens Conservancy has increased efforts to control the spread of invasive plants in our nature preserves. From February through mid-April, our hard-working land steward, Bill Rucker (at left in photo), focused on removal of invasive shrubs such as privet, burning bush, multiflora rose, and autumn olive in Blair Preserve and the Lindy Roosenburg Preserve. From mid-April through May, the focus switched to garlic mustard in several preserves. In late May, another target was wineberry near the John Knouse Trail in Canaan Preserve.

Bill was joined by a part-time assistant land steward Roni Clark (center), and later, by intern Malie Curry to further the stewardship team’s capacity. With the burst of understory growth in May, the crew’s summer focus has switched from invasive plant control to trail maintenance, mostly in Baker and Canaan Preserves, so trails remain easily accessible to hikers and other explorers. This has not always been true in past summers, when some trails became too overgrown by encroaching vegetation to be very inviting. The increase in stewardship efforts allowing us to carefully maintain our 10 miles of trails was made possible with the help of the Healthy Forest Fund, supplemented by a grant from the Athens County Foundation.

Your QCD can help Save Land

If you are at least age 70 1/2, you can make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from your IRA to Athens Conservancy. This can satisfy your required minimum distribution … and help save local land, too! For details on this and other giving opportunities, go HERE. Your support makes a huge difference in our efforts to protect the lands of southeastern Ohio. We are funded almost 100% by your donations and grants.

Meet Board Member Andrea Miller

Athens Conservancy’s board of directors is a multi-talented, engaged, experienced, and thoroughly brilliant group! We want you to get to know them, too! Meet Andrea Miller, who joined the board in 2022. Andrea grew up on her great grandmother’s farm in southeast Ohio, and is the sustainable forestry program manager at Rural Action.

Why is spending time outdoors important to you?

It’s because I love plants, mushrooms, fresh air, insects, and birds. If I don’t spend time outside regularly, I might miss something really special.

What’s your perfect outdoors-kind-of-day?

Kayaking, hiking, finding mushrooms, and seeing a rare plant blooming.

Winding Road Grant: Land Acknowledgement

We are thrilled to share the news that this spring Athens Conservancy was one of 38 recipients of mini-grants from Ohio’s Winding Road. Awardees include businesses, individuals, organizations, and municipalities in the nine-county area served by Ohio’s Winding Road. The seed grants are all under $700 and are designed to fill in gaps and jumpstart local projects. We’re delighted the $450 grant will fund our project, On Native Land, a unique effort that will give hikers and other recreational explorers a chance to pause and reflect on the ancestral history of our beautiful southeastern Ohio lands. Watch for more details!
