Hello everyone, 

We welcomed 49 new Assistant District Attorneys to our Office this month, a diverse group of prosecutors from law schools across the country. They will undergo intensive training in preparation for their role in Pursuing Justice with Integrity to serve the people of the Bronx.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Domestic violence is a tragic plague in the Bronx. Our Domestic Violence Bureau handles these cases. This year, we handled 123 cases so far and 2,224 victim follow ups. Specially trained Assistant District Attorneys work with victims on prosecuting the abusers, and Crime Victims advocates offer trauma counseling and referrals to housing and other services.

Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson’s office partnered with us to secure a grant which will help our efforts to stop domestic violence, including enhanced investigations of cyber-stalking and other online crimes, and more funds to improve response to victims of strangulation, which is a bellwether of homicide.

To raise awareness of this issue, we will hold our 5th Annual 5K Run/Walk/ Roll To End Domestic Violence next Saturday, October 15, 2022. We announced the event at Yankee Stadium before last Saturday’s game. The team is a co-sponsor of the 5K.

Busted Rent Scammer

A Bronx woman pleaded guilty to Grand Larceny for stealing $27,600 in deposits for rent-stabilized apartments she did not deliver. A judge has ordered the defendant to pay the money back. If she does not, she will be sentenced to 1-3 years in prison.

If you or someone you know has been a victim of a scam:

• Please file a police report at your nearest precinct. Give as many details as you can. Make sure your contact information is up to date.
• Once the police report has been filed, our office receives the report and assigns it to an Assistant District Attorney. 
• The Assistant District Attorney will determine if there’s enough evidence to prosecute. They will follow up with the victim directly.

Man Indicted For Transit Authority Employee Attack

A Manhattan man was indicted for second-degree Assault and additional charges for attacking an NYC Transit Authority employee at the Pelham Bay Park train station. The transit employee was slammed to the ground causing broken bones.

Fit For Trial

Jose Gonzalez, accused of running down FDNY EMT Yadira Arroyo with her ambulance, killing her, in 2017, was found fit to stand trial on September 21. Mental health experts had deemed Gonzalez unfit to stand trial earlier this year. Last Thursday he appeared in court to face murder charges. A trial date was set for January 3, 2023.

The Department of Justice’s Office of Violence Against Women has allocated a $1 million grant to the Office of the Bronx Borough President and the Bronx District Attorney’s Office towards the “Bronx Intimate Partner High-Risk Homicide Reduction Project.” Domestic Violence Bureau Chief Agata DiGiovanni and Crime Victims staff attended a DV awareness event on Tuesday at Borough Hall to share resources from our office.

Fostering understanding on how the legal system works is one way we hope to inspire young people to pursue a legal profession. Our Youth Trial Advocacy Program (YTAP) provides students with an opportunity to explore a career in law through a mock trial experience. Our Assistant District Attorneys work with students from high schools across on real cases. The students are divided into teams and try their cases in our courtrooms in front of a real judge.
