December 27, 2023

Greetings!

I hope you are enjoying a wonderful holiday season.

As we approach the end of 2023, let us take this time to reflect and express how grateful we are for everyone in our lives. Let us look to the New Year with high hopes, but also with determination and diligence to reach our goals.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your Bronx District Attorney. I look forward to 2024, working with elected officials, community leaders and most of all YOU, the people of the Bronx, to ensure that the Bronx becomes a safer place to live, work and visit.

In service,

DA Clark

DNA Cold Case

Our Office will never give up on justice for victims and survivors.

On December 14, Bronx District Attorney Clark, Manhattan District Attorney Bragg and New York City Police Commissioner Edward A. Caban announced that a Florida man was indicted in NY’s first use of investigative genetic genealogy to solve cold case rapes. The Bronx DA’s office used a Department of Justice grant to employ technology that led to suspects in sex assaults from 2000-2001 in the Bronx and Manhattan.

“After all these years, we are finally providing justice for two women who survived terrifying attacks. Our Bronx victim said she had been waiting more than 20 years to hear that her alleged rapist was caught,” District Attorney Clark said. “I thank the Manhattan DA’s Office and the NYPD, and my Forensic Science Unit for their relentless efforts for these women. Investigative Genetic Genealogy will help solve all sorts of cold cases, not limited to murders, and hold perpetrators accountable. It will also help to name our unidentified homicide victims so their relatives can have closure.”

ABC-7's "Up Close" Interview

On December 24, Bronx District Attorney Clark spoke with ABC-7’s Bill Ritter on “Up Close” to discuss tackling crime rates in the Bronx and what it means to lead an Office in “pursuing justice with integrity.” Watch the full interview here.

Tree of Angels

On December 8, our Crime Victims Assistance Bureau held the 13th annual Tree of Angels Lighting. Every year, families and friends unite in memory of those taken by homicides to support each other through the holiday season. Each family decorated a special ornament in honor of their loved one and hung it on the tree. This tradition reminds these families that they are not alone in their pain during the holidays and that our Office is here to support them through this time when they need it the most.

Daycare Legislation

On December 15, Bronx District Attorney Clark joined Sen. Gustavo Rivera and Council Member Pierina Sanchez in support of proposed legislation which would require home daycare centers to fully disclose to the state’s Office of Children and Family Services every person residing in the home where a child daycare is being operated, have surprise inspections, and other safety measures. This legislation comes after the tragic death of 1-year-old Nicholas Dominici, who died from fentanyl exposure in the Divino Nino Daycare, which was allegedly a front for drug traffickers. The daycare operator is charged with murder, and the Bronx DA’s Office is assessing hundreds of home daycares in the borough.

"How Many Stops" Act

On December 15, District Attorney Clark released this statement in response to the “How Many Stops” Act:

Hope House

On November 19, District Attorney Clark joined officials of the Greenburger Center, Manhattan and Queens District Attorneys and other city officials to break ground for Hope House on Crotona Park. Hope House will provide defendants with serious mental illness with long term, secure treatment without compromising public safety. “I have supported The Greenburger Center’s relentless effort to bring this residence to the Bronx, where it is sorely needed,” said District Attorney Clark.

ADAs Admitted to SCOTUS

On November 13, nine of our Assistant District Attorneys were admitted to argue before the Supreme Court of the United States, a prestigious milestone in a legal career. If a case prosecuted by the Bronx District Attorney’s Office were to reach the level of the highest court, these attorneys would be able to represent both the Office of the District Attorney and all of Bronx county. We are proud of them!

Maldives Prosecutor General's Office

On December 11, the Bronx District Attorney’s Office welcomed prosecutors from the Maldives Prosecutor General’s office who visited the U.S. on a study tour with the Department of Justice’s Office of Overseas Prosecutorial Development, Assistance and Training (OPDAT). They spoke with Assistant District Attorneys, NYPD and victims’ advocates about the criminal justice system and observed a criminal trial.

District Attorney Clark and

Police Commissioner Caban in Conversation

On October 30, Police Commissioner Caban visited the Office and conversed with District Attorney Clark before an audience of our staff, regarding improving public safety in the Bronx. The two Bronxites spoke about growing up in the Bronx with a heart for service. He thanked our Office for helping to address the needs of people wherever they are.

Court News

On December 13, District Attorney Clark announced that a Bronx man was sentenced to 16 years in prison and 5 years post release supervision for fatally beating a baby. Keishawn Gordon, 26, had violently squeezed the baby and threw him up in the air and hit him in the face because the child would not stop crying. On December 13, District Attorney Clark announced that a Bronx man was sentenced to 20 years in prison and 20 years post release supervision for raping a woman at knifepoint in Saint Mary’s Park. On May 31, 2022, Christopher Martinez, 20, had waited near the victim’s home in Mott Haven after she dropped one of her sons off at school. Martinez approached her and robbed her at knifepoint of $60 and a credit card. Then, he took her to Saint Mary’s Park and raped her. On November 6, 2023, the defendant pleaded guilty to first-degree Rape and first-degree Criminal Sexual Act. DNA collected from the victim after the rape matched the defendant’s DNA.
