Hello everyone,
Thank you to everyone who participated in our 5th annual 5K Run/Walk/Roll to End Domestic Violence last Saturday. It was a great success on a perfect Fall day! There is no problem we can’t solve when our community comes together like this. I was very BX proud! This event would not have been possible without support from our sponsors and community partners. Thank you to the NY Yankees, The Office of Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson, the NYC Mayor’s Office to End Domestic and Gender-Based Violence, BronxCare Health System and the Bronx Women’s Bar Association for working with us to empower the people of the Bronx.
On Thursday, October 13, I participated in a panel at Syracuse University School of Law to discuss the impact of the Raise the Age law. I support the law, which raised the age of criminal responsibility to 18. But many resources and services are needed in order to meet the law’s goals of keeping 16 and 17-year-olds out of the criminal justice system. And some adjustments must be made to the wording of the law to address gun possession by this age group. We are losing a generation in the Bronx to death and prison. We must do all we can to stem gun violence.
Stealing the catalytic converters from vehicles has become prevalent in the Bronx. To combat this crime, we are working with the NYPD to embed serial numbers on the converters to help deter thieves and the dishonest scrap metal shops who buy the stolen parts. We are holding an event this Friday, October 21, in the Orchard Beach parking lot. More event details below.
In service,
DA Clark,
Bronx District Attorney
| | 5K Run/Walk/Roll Against Domestic Violence Success! | | More than 350 people got moving to end domestic violence in our Bronx community at the 5th annual BXDA 5K Run/Walk/Roll to End Domestic Violence. Two of our domestic violence survivors shared their stories of heartbreak and hope, to encourage victims to break their silence and seek help. We are also very thankful that the family of NYPD officer Arianna Reyes-Gomez participated in the walk (photo: top left). Officer Reyes-Gomez was killed in a domestic violence incident earlier this year. | | |
NJ Man Indicted for Fatal 2020 Hit and Run of Food Delivery Worker in Bronx
On October 19, Yeramil Alvarez, 22, of Ridgefield New Jersey, was indicted on charges of Leaving the Scene of an Incident without Reporting, Reckless Driving, and Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle in the 2020 death of Victorio Hilario-Guzman, 37. “The defendant allegedly accelerated and ran a red light, striking a food delivery worker on a bicycle. His alleged reckless actions ended the life of the victim, who was delivering food in the middle of the pandemic,” said District Attorney Clark. “I send my deepest condolences to the victim’s family, who had to wait for two years for the defendant to be brought to justice.”

Covid-19 Vaccination Card Fraud
Two women have been indicted for fraud involving Covid-19 vaccination cards, after an investigation by the BXDA’s Economic Crimes Bureau. One woman was a NYC teacher who allegedly purchased a fake vaccination card. The other woman was a city contractor allegedly selling vaccination cards through her Twitter account. DA Clark said “the defendants were allegedly willing to endanger the health and safety of people in the Bronx, including students. It is essential we do our part to protect people from a virus that is still leading to hospitalizations and even death.”

On Wednesday, Oct 12, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the NYC Special Narcotics Prosecutor's Office announced the indictment of two people on narcotics charges after seizing approximately 300,000 “rainbow fentanyl” pills and over 20 pounds of powdered fentanyl in the Bronx. DA Clark expressed thanks to both agencies for keeping these drugs off our streets and out of children’s hands. “[It] is yet another dark marketing tool used by drug traffickers,” said DA Clark.
| | Walk the Bridge Against Violence | | Last Sunday, DA Clark and BXDA staff joined elected officials, clergy and residents of the Bronx and Northern Manhattan in a march across the 207th Street Bridge, to show support for the communities on both sides of the span which are enduring a surge in shootings. It was organized by Bronx Assembly Member Yudelka Tapia and Manhattan Assembly Member Manny de Los Santos. The event was held at the end of Hispanic Heritage Month to highlight that many of the victims of gun violence are from the Hispanic community. | |

Catalytic Converter Anti-Theft Event
| | In the Bronx, there have been 1,200 catalytic converter thefts so far this year. DA Clark gave an exclusive interview to News 12 about how she is addressing the lucrative, burgeoning crime. | | Protect your car’s catalytic converter! This Friday, we are teaming up with the NYC Police Foundation and the NYPD Patrol Boro Bronx to embed unique serial numbers onto your vehicle’s converter. This number will help deter thieves, and if they do steal it, it should give pause to unscrupulous auto shops or salvage yards to accept them. This is a free service. Police will do the serial numbers for the first 80 attendees. See the flyer for more information. | | The Bronx District Attorney’s office is one of the largest employers in the Bronx.
