Your Summer Fast Forward and Rewind

This country has a curious bait and switch tradition when it comes to holidays: President’s Day is largely observed as a sale day for linens; Thanksgiving is about families, football and food; and yesterday, Memorial Day, is about barbecuing and the unofficial beginning of summer. To be sure, while each of these holidays has an origin story which carries deep meaning for some, we nonetheless celebrate them the way we do, with a certain amount of attention paid to economics and pleasure.

Since we are now into the summer season, it is time to consider summer plans, summer wants and desires, and, for those of us who are not fond of the crowds, heat, and mosquitos, how we may be able to endure the season with grace. But maybe summer shouldn’t be about endurance, maybe it should be like New Year’s – a time of personal ambition and remaking. The days are longer, the nights are shorter, and we have plenty of time to put the kind of energy we cannot muster in dark, cold January, into making ourselves incrementally better.

Are you going to tackle a personal project? Are you going to pick up your smart phone less often? Are you going to keep a journal? Learn an instrument? Start being nicer to strangers?  Are you going to try to approach life with more humor and compassion and less reactivity?

We realize that this is also vacation and beach-read season, but we want to dangle this carrot in front of you to see who might be up for the challenge. Write to editor@hvpilot.com about your summer plans. It is a challenge, so there is no shame in not reaching your goal; the glory is all in the intention.

Thanks for all of your support and happy (unofficial) summer.

Memorial Day Parade in Rhinebeck Village

The annual Rhinebeck Village Memorial Day Parade was held yesterday in perfect May weather, with an exemplary turnout of children, parents, and other Rhinebeckers lining the parade route. The event, organized by the American Legion Post #429, began with the ceremonial flag raising. The many marchers and riders in the parade included firefighters and EMTs from the Rhinebeck and Rhinecliff fire departments in both antique and spanking new fire trucks, as well as the Capitol Region Celtic Pipe Band (bagpipes), kids on skateboards representing The Board Room in Rhinebeck, the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Rhinebeck Crew Team, and the American Legion Band, among others.
Under the Radar
Warnock Gets Pushback at Bard // U.S. Georgia Senator Raphael Warnock (D) was in town this past weekend to provide the one hundred sixty-third commencement address at Bard College. Warnock spoke at length about Bard’s long history of reaching out to political refugees over the last century or more, including efforts to provide an educational safe haven for Hungarian students in the 1950s and more recently students from Belarus, Afghanistan and Ukraine. However, his opening remarks were interrupted by protesters chanting “Stop Cop City,” a reference to the Atlanta Public Training Safety Center which has been a source of great controversy and opposition recently. The relevance to Bard is the alleged financial connection between the funding of “Cop City” and the Chair of Bard’s Board of Trustees, James Cox Chambers. The protestors unfurled a banner and distributed fliers about the grass roots action against “Cop City” and derailed the Senator’s speech for several minutes, before the Senator addressed the protestors with an affable laugh and the observation, “Bard College, you are living up to your reputation,” which won him some applause.

Amtrak Keeps the Trains Running // Earlier this month, we reported on rumors that Amtrak might be temporarily halting service to and from Rhinecliff Station in light of the ongoing construction and parking problems (see story). Now the Pilot has official word from Amtrak that there has not been, nor will there be, any significant interruption of service for Rhinecliff. Amtrak Senior Public Relations Manager Jason Abrams told the Pilot in an email that “Amtrak service will continue at Rhinecliff Station. Amtrak is partnering with New York State DOT to make improvements at the station. Design work is underway and includes accommodations for continued train service during construction.” He added that an update to plans and a more solid timeline of the multi-year renovation would be made available to the public this summer.

Girls on the Run // Congratulations to the Rhinebeck Girls Varsity Track & Field team, who turned in an outstanding performance at Monroe Woodbury High School on Thursday, May 25th for Varsity Sectionals.
