New Year, New Hearing Goals

A new year is a natural time to check in on our health and set intentions for the months ahead. Many people often make New Year's resolutions that are difficult to achieve or maintain. This year, we want you to consider choosing your hearing health as an area of focus for 2026. Your hearing plays a vital role in communication, brain health, and overall well-being. The good news? Small, consistent habits can make a big difference.

Hearing Care is Health Care

Hearing goes beyond our ears. We hear with our ears, but we understand with our brain. By supporting our hearing health, we support how easily our brain processes information, we feel more connected to others, and we can minimize the amount of listening effort needed to follow a conversation.

Supporting your hearing helps support your brain.

Healthy Habits That Support Hearing & Brain Health

1) Nourish Your Body

A heart-healthy diet supports blood flow to the inner ear and brain.

  • Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables
  • Choose whole grains and healthy fats
  • Stay hydrated
  • Reduce ultra-processed foods
  • Reduce sodium intake

Keep it simple: What’s good for your heart is good for your hearing.

2) Keep Moving

Regular physical activity helps with:

  • Circulation to the auditory system
  • Balance and fall prevention
  • Cognitive & mental health

You don’t need intense workouts to see benefits. Consistent movement, like regular walks, adds up. Health guidelines recommend about 150 minutes of moderate activity or 75 minutes of higher-intensity activity each week.

A walk with a friend is a great place to start.

Mobility limitations? Try some chair yoga!

3) Keep Learning

Challenging the brain helps keep auditory pathways active. Learning doesn’t look the same for everyone. Find activities that feel enjoyable and meaningful to you.

  • Read, learn a new skill, or try a hobby
  • Play music or listen intentionally
  • Stay socially engaged

The brain thrives on stimulation.

4) Use Hearing Technology Consistently

If you wear hearing aids or other hearing technology, daily use matters.

  • Consistent use helps the brain adapt
  • Improves clarity and reduces listening fatigue
  • Supports memory and attention over time

Think of hearing technology like training for a race. The more consistently you practice, the stronger and more prepared your brain becomes for

the moments that require extra effort, such as busy social gatherings.

This is why it is important to wear your hearing aids all the time,

even in quiet environments. Our ears never sleep.

5) Check Your Hearing Annually

Hearing changes gradually, which makes it easy to miss early signs of change.

An annual hearing assessment helps:

  • Track changes over time
  • Adjust technology when needed to optimize your communication ability
  • Support early, preventative care

Like eye exams or blood pressure checks, hearing deserves routine attention.

Your Hearing Wellness Checklist

Use this simple checklist to guide your hearing health this year:

✔️ I schedule a hearing check every year

✔️ I wear my hearing technology consistently

✔️ I clean and care for my hearing technology consistently

✔️ I protect my hearing in noisy environments

✔️ I stay physically active

✔️ I eat a heart-healthy diet

✔️ I challenge my brain with learning and social activity

✔️ I speak up when I notice changes in my hearing

✔️ I prioritize rest and manage stress

Over time, these small steps will lead to a big improvement and prevent decline.

January Takeaway

Better hearing habits today support clearer communication, stronger brain health, and a more connected life all year long.

If hearing hasn’t been part of your health goals before, this is a great time to start!
