Urban Wood Success Stories:

From Churches to Universities

COST: $10 WITH THE UWN MEMBER CODE: UWN_WEBINAR

Every year, countless tons of community trees fall or are cut down due to storm damage, insect/disease outbreaks, or conflicts with either power lines or personal/commercial property needs.

When community members have strong ties to the once standing trees, they demonstrate much creativity in how they choose to honor those memorable trees.

Woodworkers are unique artists who can bring almost any vision to life with their skillful hands. They are also excellent teachers, who can inspire today's youth to think differently about what should happen to a community tree that reaches the end of its life.

This webinar celebrates the creative spirit of community members, university leaders, and woodworkers so that you may recognize new ways to honor the trees in your own neighborhood when they can no longer stand upright.

This discussion is being led by:

  • Joe Lehnen—Urban Wood Utilization Forester (Virginia Department of Forestry)
  • Chad Niman—Primary Forest Product Specialist ( Uni. of Kentucky)
  • Andy Spears—Fabrication Laboratory Tech and Sawmill Coordinator (University of Virginia)
  • Patricia Layton—Director, Wood Utilization and Design Institute (Clemson University)

Save 1-2 pm Eastern on your calendar the second Wednesday of every month for this ongoing UWN webinar series.

Board Member Spotlight

Marisa Repka, Treasurer

Each month; we'll be spotlighting a member of the UWN Board of Directors to share more about who we are and our passion for urban wood.

What got you interested in serving on the UWN board?

My company, Cambium Carbon, has been an active member of UWN since 2020. During this time I’ve had the opportunity to take part in several UWN events and initiatives. I'm excited to now play a hands-on role in shaping the future of this mission-driven organization working toward better stewardship of our natural resources.

What do you do in your "day job," and how does it relate to Urban Wood?

As a co-founder at Cambium, I work to support a network of partners across the country developing and growing wood utilization programs. I lead our "Impact" team, which partners with governments, businesses, and nonprofits to upcycle wood into value-added products that store carbon and reinvest in communities. My day-to-day can range from providing technical analysis of wood waste streams and designing the financial model for a reuse program to helping connect salvaged lumber to designers and manufacturers that can utilize it.
