Creating, Sustaining, and Expanding Public Scholarship and Community-Engaged Work by Harnessing Academic Freedom
Join the National Communication Association (NCA) on Friday, June 26, 1 – 2:30p.m. EDT for a transformative virtual event that will cover strategies for beginning, sustaining, expanding, and supporting public-facing and community-engaged IDEA scholarship and teaching in the current cultural climate.
You’ll hear from NCA Members with experience in IDEA-focused public-facing organizing who will articulate strategies for asserting academic freedom to preserve and continue public-facing and community-engaged IDEA scholarship and teaching. Attendees will also be provided with the opportunity to design and implement supportive role strategies for their own successful public-facing events.

Updates from April 2026 NCA Legislative Assembly Meeting
| | On April 24, NCA’s Legislative Assembly held its spring virtual meeting, featuring updates from association leadership, staff, and council chairs. During the session, the LA approved NCA’s new Collective Governing Values framework and acted on several journal editor appointments. The meeting concluded with a discussion of Mentoring with Momentum, President Tina M. Harris’s 2026 presidential initiative focused on strengthening mentoring across the association. | | 2027 NCA Leadership Positions: Calls for Nominations | | |

Serving in an NCA leadership role is an enriching opportunity to collaborate with colleagues, expand your professional network, and advance the communication discipline. We are seeking members to serve in roles such as Second Vice President, the Legislative Assembly, Councils, Standing Committees, National Award Selection Committees, and more. All positions selected through this cycle will begin service in 2027.
Deadlines:
Preferred deadline: July 1 (for various governance leadership positions and award selection committees)
Final deadline: Sept. 4
We encourage early submissions to support a thoughtful and collaborative review process.

| | Call for Resolution Proposals | |
NCA members are invited to submit resolution proposals for consideration by the Resolutions Committee by June 30. All proposals submitted by the deadline will be reviewed by the Resolutions Committee, which will make recommendations to the Legislative Assembly for final review, deliberation, and approval.

| | Proposal Submission Process and Deadlines | | |
Members may submit proposals to the Executive Committee or Legislative Assembly for consideration. Proposals may include policy changes, funding requests for new initiatives, bylaws amendments, and other ideas that advance NCA’s mission and strategic priorities.
Proposals with financial implications must be submitted by June 1 for consideration in the following fiscal year. All other proposals may be submitted year-round.

NCA is actively recruiting for two exciting employment opportunities located in our National Office, Washington: Convention & Meetings Manager and Digital Content & Multimedia Specialist.
The Convention & Meetings Manager will oversee the planning and execution of NCA’s Annual Convention, which is a major event attended by over 4,000 people and featuring 950 sessions, while overseeing governance meetings and providing logistical assistance to over 120 convention program planners.
The Digital Content & Multimedia Specialist supports NCA’s communications, marketing, digital, storytelling, and virtual programming initiatives. This role creates engaging digital and multimedia content across email, social media, web, video, and print channels to strengthen member engagement and promote NCA programs, initiatives, and events.

Welcome Pallavi Guha, Ph.D., NCA’s Director of Research, Publications, and Professional Advancement
| |
NCA welcomes Pallavi Guha, Ph.D., as our new Director of Research, Publications, and Professional Advancement. She is an award-winning media researcher and a former international journalist with over 20 years of experience. Her appointment to the NCA leadership team follows a successful term as a Fall 2025 Visiting Scholar at the Center for Advanced Research in Global Communication (CARGC) at the University of Pennsylvania and a tenured Associate Professor of Journalism at a large four-year university in Maryland.
Pallavi has also previously served as Director of the Legislative Assembly for NCA and board member at Girls Report, Inc., which advances civic media journalism for young girls in Nepal. Guha also serves on the AEJMC Presidential Strategic Planning Task Force and chaired the AEJMC Resolutions Committee for the Public Forum and Response division and served on the AEJMC AI Task Force.
Pallavi holds a Ph.D. in Journalism and a Graduate Certificate in Women’s Studies from the University of Maryland, College Park. She also has a M.A. in Communication and Information Studies from Rutgers University, an M.A. and M.Phil. in International Relations from Jadavpur University, and B.A. in Political Science from Presidency College.
