SBPA Launches New AI and Robotics (AIR) Concentration Open to All UDC Schools and Colleges

Starting this fall, students from all majors at UDC will have the chance to explore a bold new academic path: a concentration in artificial intelligence and robotics (AIR). Created by the School of Business and Public Administration (SBPA), the AIR concentration brings together AI, robotics, STEM and business to reflect the way technology is reshaping today’s workforce. The goal is to give students the tools to adapt, collaborate across fields and thrive in an increasingly digital world.


“This course blends the power of artificial intelligence and robotics with business innovation, giving students hands-on experience with no-code/low-code tools like Tableau and Power BI," said Professor Anshu Arora. "We are building the future of interdisciplinary learning, and I’m honored to help shape the next generation of tech-savvy business leaders right here at UDC!”

Sabine O’Hara Wins Global Award for Food Security Book 

Sabine O’Hara, a distinguished professor in agricultural and environmental economics at the Center for College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES), is still letting the news sink in. Her latest book, Food Justice in American Cities: Stories of Health and Resilience,” has won first prize in food security books at the Gourmand Global Awards during the World Food Summit 2025 in Portugal. 


Published following her 2023 sabbatical, the book dives deeply into food insecurity in urban America, highlighting not just statistics but the lived experiences, challenges and resilience of the people most affected.

UDC Names Allan A.C. Griffith III, Chief of Police and Director of Public Safety


Chief Allan A.C. Griffith III, is UDC's new Chief of Police/Director of Public Safety. Griffith will oversee the Office of Public Safety & Emergency Management (OPSEM) and serve as its top law enforcement official. 


“After 35 years in law enforcement, it is truly a unique full-circle moment for me to be able to give back to the city I have proudly called home my entire life,” he said.

Collaboration and Vision Take Center Stage at HBCU Title III Administrators Conference 


UDC co-hosted the 2025 National Association of HBCU Title III Administrators Technical Assistance Workshop and Conference with Bowie State University in Crystal City, Virginia—an engaging and impactful gathering of leaders, educators and advocates committed to the future of historically Black colleges and universities. 


Throughout the week, the university demonstrated the strength and reach of its academic community. Faculty, staff, students and administrators were actively involved—from leading sessions to connecting with peers and sharing UDC’s strategic approach to Title III funding and student success.

Building Global Bridges: UDC Professor Collaborates on ESG Research in Colombia

Professor Brandon Schweitzer, an assistant professor of accounting in UDC Community College’s Business Program, completed a Fulbright Specialist assignment in Medellín, Colombia, in fall 2024. Partnering with Mundo Organizacional at Uniremington’s School of Business, he focused on advancing research into environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues and their financial impact on companies across the Pacific Alliance—a key Latin American trade bloc.


During his visit, Dr. Schweitzer led workshops and collaborated closely with faculty and students to deepen their understanding of sustainable business practices in emerging markets. I caught up with him to learn about his experiences and reflections—here’s what he shared.

From Classroom to Community: How UDC Shaped an Engineer’s Path

When Dilnesahu Nukuro first stepped onto the Van Ness campus, he was eager to learn but didn’t know how far his college journey would take him. Today, Nukuro is a senior information systems specialist and engineer at the Oregon Health Authority and has helped pioneer technology solutions in public health. Nukuro believes his time at UDC was undoubtedly a critical factor in getting him there.


“UDC was a turning point for me,” Nukuro said. “The support I received from faculty and the opportunities I had to do real research while I was still a student made all the difference.”

New Cybersecurity Tech Hub Launches in Congress Heights

UDC, in collaboration with Accenture and PeopleShores, announced the official launch of a new Cybersecurity Tech Hub at UDC’s Congress Heights campus, marking a major investment in the future of the District’s workforce. The partnership is designed to expand career pathways into the cybersecurity industry for District residents through an innovative, paid apprenticeship program. The inaugural cohort of 50 individuals began the program in April 2025.


“This partnership is much more than a training program—it is a launchpad for District residents seeking meaningful, lasting careers in a high-demand field,” said President Maurice D. Edington. “It also reflects UDC’s strategic vision of becoming the District’s leading workforce and economic mobility engine and we are extremely proud to work with Accenture and PeopleShores to bring this vision to life.”

Mangeon and Queguiner Earn Top Singles and Doubles Recognition in East Region

UDC's men's tennis team ended its season on a high note, with multiple players earning top-10 placements in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional Rankings.


Louis Mangeon finished the season ranked No. 6 in singles, followed closely by teammate Louka Queguiner at No. 8. Together, the Firebird duo secured the No. 3 doubles ranking in the region.


Mangeon posted a 7-8 record in singles at the No. 1 spot, while Queguiner went 9-7 at No. 2. As a team, they compiled an 8-8 record in doubles play and advanced to the semifinal round of the ITA East Regional Tournament in the fall. The pair also notched a 2-1 record against the region’s top-ranked duo, Seth Newman and Henry Ronberg.


The Firebirds wrapped up the season ranked No. 5 in the East Region, finishing with an 8-9 overall record and earning their second straight NCAA tournament appearance.
