Welcome Back

Annual awareness-building campaigns are important reminders to both reflect and to act. This month is National Minority Health Month and next month is Mental Health Awareness Month, including an emphasis on Maternal Mental Health specifically. Being an advocate for more equitable mental healthcare is something we all can do collectively over the next few weeks by sharing our stories and shedding light on these important causes together.

April 11-17 is Black Maternal Health Week

The 2025 Black Maternal Health Week (BMHW25) theme, “Healing Legacies: Strengthening Black Maternal Health Through Collective Action and Advocacy,” emphasizes the power of Black-led perinatal, maternal, and reproductive health organizations to drive systemic change and foster community healing. The theme acknowledges the persistent legacies of systemic oppression(s), reproductive injustices, and health inequities that have disproportionately affected Black Mamas and people. It emphasizes the need for healing at both individual and community levels while addressing the need for restorative approaches to maternal health care. BMHW is a week-long campaign founded and led by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance to build awareness, activism, and community-building to amplify the voices, perspectives and lived experiences of Black Mamas and birthing people. The week is intentionally held during National Minority Health Month to join dozens of global organizations to advocate for the elimination of maternal mortality. The activities and conversations hosted throughout the week intentionally center the values and practices of the birth and reproductive justice movements.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

May isn't just Mental Health Awareness Month; it's also more specifically Maternal Mental Health Awareness Month, and the first Wednesday is designated as World Maternal Mental Health Day, which takes place this year on May 7th. Since 2016, a multidisciplinary group of international maternal mental health activists, academics, clinicians, and people with lived experience have come together once a year to raise awareness of this topic and demand maternal mental health services for all. With partners around the world, we hope to give more visibility to this problem, combat social stigma, improve detection and treatment, and advocate for more resources for maternal and infant mental health.

Mom Prom is May 17th!

Join us for a night of FUN to raise money for our work here at Perinatal Support Washington! Now in its 15th year, Mom Prom is a one-of-a-kind event focused on community and celebration. If you're interested in sharing your personal experiences, insights, and reflections on parenthood, we invite you to join others who have already shared their stories on our blog. They have shared their harrowing experiences with anxiety and depression, psychosis, NICU stays, loss, infertility, and a slew of relatable accounts of just how tiring and emotionally challenging it all can be.

If you are interested in sharing your journey, whatever it may be, please fill out this form, and a staff member will follow up with you: Share your story here

A Mother's Day donation to Perinatal Support Washington in honor of those struggling right now will ensure the message “you are not alone” reaches someone who needs to hear it. As a bonus, every donation made during our annual fundraiser will be matched up to $5,000. Check your email inbox for updates later this month.

Warm Line Volunteer Training

Every day, volunteers provide a lifeline to parents who are struggling and feeling alone. Talking to another parent who has been through it reduces the isolation and stigma that many new parents feel. Receiving and providing peer support is unique and powerful for both the volunteer and parent! That is why we need you!

New volunteer Training on Zoom:

Saturday, May 31 & Sunday, June 1,

9:00am - 1:45pm

We are staffed by parents with lived experience of a perinatal mental health issue such as postpartum depression, anxiety or experienced the NICU, a birth trauma, or a perinatal loss. Now on the other side, our volunteers support parents who are in the thick of it, walking alongside each caller's journey to healing.
