Fire Hydrant Flushing

The Public Works Department Utilities Division will begin its annual hydrant flushing program in late March. This process moves water through the pipelines at a fast rate to clean the lines, clear stagnant water, and identify broken hydrants. Each hydrant is left open for approximately 2 to 3 minutes until the water runs clear. Crews will work in sections and the whole program takes about 3 weeks to complete, depending on weather.

If broken hydrants are found, they will be marked with plastic rings stating "OUT OF SERVICE" to identify them for the Fire Department. Rest assured that Public Works crews will repair these fire hydrants in the near future.

For more information about hydrant flushing, call Public Works at (847) 705-5200.

Time for Some Spring Cleaning?

The average person throws away 68lbs of clothing per year. Clothing and Housewares account for approximately 10% of the municipal waste stream. 85% of clothing does not get recycled or donated, it gets trashed.

The Village of Palatine offers a free textile recycling program through Simple Recycling. A FREE, simple and convenient home pick up service for unwanted clothing and housewares in re-usable condition.

All residents need to do is place their unwanted items in plastic bags or boxes, schedule a pick up date online or call 866-835-5068 and leave outside front door. Not sure what you can recycle? Review a list of items here.

Please Don't Feed the Wildlife

Many people think they are being kind by feeding wildlife, but it can cause issues in your neighborhood by bringing in unwanted wildlife and stray animals. Please do your part to keep wildlife and rodents away from your home.

Do not feed animals like feral cats, squirrels, deer or birds (unless using an elevated bird feeder). In fact, in Palatine it is illegal to feed wildlife except for the use of e l e v a t e d bird feeders. Elevated bird feeders are allowed for use as long as all food, feed or seed is placed in a feeder designed for the specific purpose of feeding birds.

For more information visit the Palatine Animal Control website.
