The Public Works Department Utilities Division will begin its annual hydrant flushing program in late March. This process moves water through the pipelines at a fast rate to clean the lines, clear stagnant water, and identify broken hydrants. Each hydrant is left open for approximately 2 to 3 minutes until the water runs clear. Crews will work in sections and the whole program takes about 3 weeks to complete, depending on weather.
If broken hydrants are found, they will be marked with plastic rings stating "OUT OF SERVICE" to identify them for the Fire Department. Rest assured that Public Works crews will repair these fire hydrants in the near future.
