Students singing and dancing at the 2025 OSOM Scholarship Gala

USM students perform at this year's Osher School of Music Scholarship Gala on Dec. 5.

So many reasons to celebrate the

Power of USM!

Greetings!

As 2025 winds down, I've been thinking a lot about everything our University community has achieved this year. It's been an amazing journey full of growth, celebration, and meaningful connections across all our campuses.

This fall gave us some really exciting moments – the Crewe Center for the Arts opened on the Portland campus, and the new Collab: Esports Arena launched in Gorham. Both spaces are already buzzing with student energy, and it's been so inspiring to watch USM continue to grow and create incredible opportunities for the next generation of Huskies.

The end of the year is also an opportunity to appreciate how special our alumni community truly is. Whether you made it back for Homecoming, connected with current students, or cheered us on from wherever life has taken you – you make a real difference in the lives of students today.

In our December newsletter, we're shining a spotlight on some remarkable alumni, including Amanda Savage 07, the first Mainer elected to the American Nurses Association Board of Directors, and Dr. Heather Perry 20G, Maine's 2025 Superintendent of the Year. You'll also learn about WMPG's awesome new project supporting the Oakhurst Campus Food Pantry, catch up on other amazing alumni achievements, and even vote on the next legacy tree for the Portland Campus!

I'm also thrilled to welcome Allison Boyce 19, 24G, the newest member of our Alumni Engagement Council. We’re excited to have her join us and I look forward to the perspective and enthusiasm she will bring.

With 2026 right around the corner, I hope you find time to reflect on the moments that made your year special and feel proud to be part of this community. Thanks for your continued support and for keeping the Husky spirit alive and strong!

Warmly,

Josephine Katandula 21

Vote for a new legacy tree on the Portland campus!

In 2023, USM lost one of its oldest, biggest trees on campus: a 219-year-old copper beech on the west side of Luther Bonney Hall that had a trunk five feet wide! (Read the story here.) The community celebrated its life and preserved parts of the tree for various projects, including a wooden bowl crafted by Eric Johnson 19, on display in the President's Office. Now it's time to plan for a new legacy tree on the Portland campus, to be chosen by popular vote.
