Faculty Development Update
A “centred in family medicine” approach to Point Of Care Ultrasound (POCUS), coming soon to the uOttawa family medicine residency experience.
On Thursday, September 15, 2022, a working group of family medicine faculty and residents met at The Ottawa Hospital Family Health Team, Civic Campus, to define how to make FM-centred POCUS training a reality.
Dr. Denice Lewis, Assistant Professor, Postgraduate Director of Curriculum, outlined the proposed POCUS procedural curriculum objectives and plans for teaching this new curriculum in academic sessions and at the bedside. Dr. Jason Trickovic, Assistant Professor, Family physician and Emergency physician discussed his work researching indications, and the literature surrounding the pros and cons, and the costs of the different probes. Dr. Eric Wooltorton, Associate Professor, Director of Faculty Development, discussed the plan to equitably purchase eight new devices that will be distributed to the main teaching units and community sites.
Family physicians in attendance with experience teaching POCUS in family medicine, maternity care, sports medicine, and emergency and critical care contexts, shared their experiences and desire for the new FM-centred POCUS program.

It is hoped that focusing POCUS training on a few indications will improve patient care and safely build our department’s capacity for use of this technology. Plans are in place to gradually integrate more formal certification programs for faculty and residents.

Postgraduate Retreat
At our Postgraduate retreat on Thursday, September 8, many of our faculty, residents, and staff participated in a quality improvement exercise. The group discussed accomplishments from the past year which included: changes to CaRMS; the mentorship program for all incoming residents; the development of the anti-racism and long-term care modules; the first postgraduate bootcamp for incoming residents; faculty feedback; and the hiring of an IT team to help develop administrative tools.
Participants received an update regarding the upcoming expansion of residency positions, the formation of a POCUS working group, the initiative to create a Competency Committee, and the plans for accreditation in 2024. The afternoon was spent in large group discussions of topics that included curriculum, educational resources, and evaluations. The next Postgraduate retreat will take place in September 2023.

Residents Retreat
On Friday, September 16, the annual resident retreat took place with both PGY1 and PGY2 residents coming together for a day of wellness and team building.
The retreat began with a morning hike through the Skyline trail in Gatineau Park. Residents walked through the park with their peers while reflecting on, and discussing, wellness topics. The hike and discussions were a bonding experience that promoted the program, a sense of community and camaraderie.
The afternoon portion of the retreat took place at our teaching space where the group gathered for an inspiring story-sharing wellness event in which they discussed how to build resilience and mitigate burnout. They also addressed how to identify and commit to their wellness goals. Overall, the retreat was an opportunity for peers to recognize challenges and develop a supportive environment in which to achieve their learning goals.
