Heart Healthy Tips

Find the Sodium, Read the Label

  • Sodium is an essential nutrient primarily consumed as salt (sodium chloride).
  • Healthy eating patterns limit sodium to the Chronic Disease Risk Reduction (CDRR) levels defined by the National Academies.
  • 1,200 mg/day for ages 1 through 3
  • 1,500 mg/day for ages 4 through 8
  • 1,800 mg/day for ages 9 through 13
  • 2,300 mg/day for all other age groups
  • Most sodium comes from already prepared foods at restaurants and grocery stores.
  • Use the percent daily values while reading a food label.
  • 20% or more per serving is considered high.
  • Pay attention to servings sizes.
Rethink Fats

  • Eat foods with healthy fats like fish, nuts, seeds and vegetable oils.
  • Avoid solids fats like butter, shortening and fat on meats.
  • Switch from butter or cream cheese on your toast to a nut butter or avocado.
  • Eat more foods naturally low in saturated fats like beans, peas, lentils and lean cuts of meat.
Modify How You Cook

  • Using onions, garlic, herbs and spices when cooking is a great way to add flavors to foods instead of salt.
  • Use cooking oils that are low in saturated fats, such as avocado, canola, olive and safflower.
  • Try to bake or grill instead of frying foods.
